Beautiful day --60cfs. No hatches except a very small grey mayfly. No fish in AM. Fish turned on about 2 PM and had excellent fishing for about 2 hours using small yellow egg pattern and olive RS-2. Many small bows , mid sized browns and several large bows . Several chases on streamer but no hookups. Browns are already spawning--please watch out for, and avoid the beds.

Water is low but still a good enough flow. Caught about 10 quality fish. One brown was 24 inches and at least 5 pounds. Also caught several rainbows in the 18- to 19-inch range. Best fly was the Flash Back Beadhead Pheasant Tail s16. One rainbow was caught on a hopper on a hopper/dropper combination and one smaller one on a red San Juan Worm.

1st time fishing this property... river flowing a little high and off color for early April. Nevertheless, we landed a few rainbows (14 - 18") and a 19" brown trout. Fish holding deep in the slower water... sucess w/ streamers and BH nymphs with flash or color (purple/red).

On a snowy October day, my guest Gary Smith and I had a great 2 1/2 hour adventure on C-56. a total of 14 fish landed and two break off's. Leave the 5x and 6x at home, this is definitely 4x water. Beautiful, healthy browns and rainbows in the 18 to 22 inch range who were attracted to flashback pheasant tails and purple princes.

I fished the lower half of the lease all day-just because I always fish the upper half. Caught fish on several patterns hoppers, a small tan stonefly nymph of my own design. mahogany duns in the afternoon, trico spinners, sculpins,BWO, etc. low flows and moss were the conditions of the day, but fish were cooperative.Landed 16 and hooked 20 or thereabouts.lost one Very large bow to the moss right at the net.All were the usual Yampa slabs from 15 to 24 inches except for one brookie of 10 inches. Where did he come from? I saw two big pike, but they ignored my streamers. the most fun fish were two big bows that were sipping bugs tight to the bank-I tossed them a black foam ant and they gobbled it. Another club member was there, but I never saw him- I wonder how he or she did?

They're in there. River was low and very mossy, on the bottom and floating in the current. Landed 20. The largest was a 22" brown. A dozen or so 16"-20" rainbows and a few small rainbows and browns. All very chunky. Lost 3 VERY large rainbows due to all of the moss hanging up on my droppers. It's hard to land a 6-7 lb. fish with 5 lbs. of moss hanging on your line. I think this stretch would fish better with flows in the 250-400 cfs range.

4 of us fished the entire property from about 7:00am to 8:30pm. Few fish caught, probably only 10 to 12 for the 4 of us. Streamers and nymphs caught fish. I don't think any of us caught a fish on top. There was a heavy Caddis hatch in the early evening but no fish rising to the fish. The fish caught were nice fish in the 13" - 16" range with the larger fish being the Rainbows. The moon was near full, maybe they were feeding all night and not hungry for our flies. Large Stonefly nymphs caught the most fish.

Surprisingly delightful day with numerous, large Rainbows and a good number of medium sized Browns almost all taking a beadhead crystal bugger. Midday, small mayfly hatch seemed to spark the "bite."

First trip to the Hogue. Expected pre-spawn action with eggs, midge nymphs etc. It was a bright warm afternoon. Sporatic midge hatches were happening. We had *no* action on nymphs of any sort. Instead the lower half of the property was hungry for Streamers. Fish were holding in the deep slow water at the back of the runs. We hooked up rainbows and browns (several over 20 inches, smallest about 14") on brown wolly buggers, and flashy green/yellow tailed streamers. It's an awesome place that would take a full day to see.

Oh there's still plenty of snow. It was hard at noon, but starting to crumble under foot on the way out. We took snow shoes but didn't use them.

Fished from about 10am (late start) until 3pm. Beautiful/sunny bluebird sky day - terrible for fishing. Hooked up some very large fish, but the 5x tippet wasn't enough. Water was low and lots of moss. Nice property, will go back again with 3x.

Fished pretty good in the AM from 7-10. 4 Bows and 1 pike landed ... just as many hooked and lost. 1 bow right at 19" and another at 22". Pike was around 30". Black Slumpbuster w/ 3x was enough....smart fish and good amounts of moss helped me lose a few. Most luck up top by the gravel pit. Long slow runs were the ticket. Fished the riffles in the afternoon a bit but tough to get it drifting w/o picking moss up. Took off the dropper and had some nice rises to a size 16 Mahogany Dun....no solid hook ups though. Gotta love the Yampa Mahogany Dun hatch. Much slower in the afternoon but my wife picked up a nice bow nymphing w/ a red SJ worm. Nice brown on an olive Slumpbuster in the PM as well

Fished from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Water was low and very weedy. Fish were located in the expected places, deep runs and pools. Fished Hopper Dropper with pink san juan worms and a size #16 black hares ear. Caught 8 fish in all and lost 2. 5 fish caught were over 20#. A couple of these fish took the #8 foam hopper. 4 took the san juan worm, and the largest fish of the day took the hares ear. My wife Pam faught it for a few minutes until the hook straightened out. She was fishing an ultrafine 4 wt. which looked like a Pretzel, and just could not budge such a large fish. Although not many fish hooked, they are all bruisers, and exceptionally strong fish.

Was overcast all day with temperatures in the low 50s and high 40s and no wind. The river was flowing in the 120s. There was another member named Tom T??? on the property, and he was kind enough to describe the property to me and my wife. We caught several 13 - 15 inch fish in the shallower runs, and hooked approx. 20 larger fish in the deeper pools, especially at the lower end of the property. Almost all fish were caught or hooked on size 20 or 22 baetis patterns, with a few also on olive wooly buggers stripped along banks.

Fished the Hogue Ranch on July 7 with 3 other RMAC members. Caught a good number of big rainbows mostly in the deeper pools, with copper johns and midge droppers. Water temp went from a warm 66 in A.M. to a hot 76 in P.M. We quit early due to water temp. I would advise fishing a different property in the near term unless rains increase flow.

After a great day on C-45 I drove toward Steamboat and camped up on Rabbit Ears Pass to camp closer to the Hogue. Arrived with high expectations with the weather and river conditions perfect. Turned out to be a very tecnical day. Hooked up probably 10-12 times and landed 5 or 6. Smallest fish was about 18 inches and landed one right at 25 inches. All rainbows for me, however another member of my group landed nearly a 6 pound brown. Caught all my fish on Barr emerger, rs2 and zebra midge. I guess you can't complain with fish like these, I am probably just spoiled from past experiences here.

Fished a half day on this section 2/5. Drift ice was almost all gone by 1pm however there was still a lot of bank ice. Although the warm spell of the past few weeks has opened a substantial portion of this year, it is still cold and ice is your competition. About every 6 casts we would have to clear the guides. Caught 2 big rainbows on size 2 streamers (black bead wooly buggers on bottom), each about 19-20 inches and fat. Couple other tugs but could not hook up. Great water, should be wide open very soon.

Incredible day. Caught big fish all day long. Twenty-five fish with an average of 20+ including probably the biggest fish ever caught-at least 24 inches that finally snapped off after weed buildup. Great fly was a Trico fished as a nymph. Also good was a s20 Chocolate Emerger and a green Beadhead Caddis. Dry fly fishing was also great on PMD'S and Yellow Sallies. Fall such a great time. Also liked s20 bhRed Fox Squirrel Hair, RS2 & Chocolate Emergers.

Still fishing fantastically. Water is warming up in the heat of the day. Recommend halting fishing at around 66-67 degrees to keep down stress. Go early in the morning, fish until the water warms up to around those temps & them waint until later in the evening when cooling. They have had rain. Also may be blooming soon-doesn't hurt fishing.

First time to fish the Yampa downstream of Steamboat after the Elk River combines. Flow was very good and water was clear. The property had far more river to fish in a day than was possible. Had read some of the past reports so wasn't expecting a 20 fish day but was hoping for some big, strong fish and that was certainly the case! Beautiful Rainbows, all over 18 inches, the biggest about 22" and very heavy fish. Man those fish could pull! I look forward to getting back to the property for another sessions with these big, heavy fish.

Fishing it this time of year is touchy. In the morning it is high, but clear and by the evening it is starting to peak and get very off-color. Started the early a.m. with stripping big stuff and it paid off. Big fish in big water makes for almost scary fights! As the day heated up the fishing really slowed but you could still find them holding in the slower water and side channels. Once again, I am suprised by the strength and weight per length of the yampa rainbows. Our group picked up one large cuttbow and brown as well.

Still a lot of snow but the water is open, and a nice packed trail to the river, after that walking is a little tougher. Kris caught a 22" Rainbow(5+ pounds)on a red San Juan Worm and followed it up with a 18" Bow on a small Pheasant Tail but that was it. Kris' biggest fish ever, so that was fun.(I screwed up the picture.. ooops) Busy day with lots of anglers(4) with limited access because of the snow. So instead of fighting for the best fishing hole I grasiously yielded to my wonderful wife, consequently suffering my first "Skunk" in 54 RMAC fishing trips. But as long as she had fun.......... thats all that really maters. As you can see I am a kinder and gentler fishing partner in 2002.

Fished the Hogue from 9-12 on Sunday morning. Cool day, cloudy, perfect for fishing. First, the bad news. The moss is really, really a pain. The higher flows from the snow/rain from Saturday might have dislodged some of the bottom-moss, b/c it was throughout the water column. Literally, every cast was cleanup duty. Not every other cast. Even stripping streamers was every cast cleanup, since there was so much moss in all the water, no matter what the depth. Could only stand it for three hours. Now, the good news. During those 2 hours, caught 5 fish. 2 of them were beasts - 19-20 inches with at least 12-13 inches of girth. Set your drag tight for this water. Fished with a 14 copper john with a size 20 zebra midge dropper. All fish took the midge. All fish were caught out of the deep runs below riffles. Suprisingly, the fish don't hold directly below riffles (or in them) as they do in other places, at least as far as I could tell. Hogs like it deep, I suppose. In sum, if you are patient with regard to the moss, and like hog-hunting, this is great water. Take two days and fish the town water as well. Smaller fish but more of them, less moss.

My second trip to this property this year and the same results. Didn't catch a lot of fish but these Rainbows are huge SLABS. Arrived at Noon and on my second cast in the large run about mid property I landed a 19" 3 1/2 pound Rainbow.(on a big rubber legged Stimulator). A 20+ inch 4 pound 4 ounce Rainbow on a #16 FBPT dropper was the biggest of 4 for the day. An 18 inch hooked jaw slab on an Olive Stim size 10 and a 16 inch Rainbow on the same #16 FBPT trailing the Stim. The moss is still a problem for deep nymphing. If we could get down there I think we would be catching a mess of these hogs. Another member who was fishing the same day said he caught 8 or so in the morning, so that's probably the best time to fish, they weren't rising at all 12 to 6 while my guest and I were there. If size matters and you wan't to catch a few Hogs this property is the best RMAC property I've fished.

Yampalicious ...... If you get a chance to fish this water, do it. Big fish. We did not catch them in number although I am sure it is done some days. The fish we did catch had poundage. Yep the moss is a big issue and if you mymph and don't like to clean you line about ever other toss then skip this property. If this does not bother you and you want a shot at the 23+ inch hooked jaw brown I landed then make the drive. Hoguealicious :>)

Very nice property and the Hogues are very hospitable. They'll even supply you with a companion fishing dog named Timber! This property wasn't about quantity of fish but the quality of the huge rainbows. We only caught 6 fish, all rainbows, but these fish are special. All fish were 18 inches + but that lenghth description doesn't do these guys justice. They have a girth I've only seen on much larger fish. They are truly a different class of fish, and it's always a lot of fun catching big slabs. We fished Hoppers and droppers and caught 4 on the Hoppers, what a kick. #14 BP Hares Ear and a #16 FBPT took the other 2. May have had a hit from a Pike, as he took my Hopper and I never even felt a tug and it was gone.??? There is a lot of moss in this river. I don't know if it's always like this but it can be a problem when your trying to land a large fish and moss builds up on your line during the fight. We lost a few late in the fight do to moss build up. Thats our story and we're sticking to it!

Expecting a hot summer day, I got on the river about 6am, which made for a great day of fishing. I drifted BHHE and BHPT through the deep runs. I landed 6-8 rod-bender Rainbows (18+") and LDR another 3-4. The fights were all terrific, complete with aerial acrobatics (the fish's not mine). The action slowed by noon and I was off the river by 1pm, hot, arm weary and happy.

The river was up about 6" from previous Friday and typical runoff color. Unlike Friday it was cold, overcast & windy all day. On the river by 9 am. Didn't get a strike until after Noon. Nice action between Noon and 3:30 PM when it warmed up a bit. Ended the day with 8 Rainbows & a couple of Whitefish. All nice sized fish but not hogs. Had two hogs on but one broke me off immediately and I misplayed the other. Resorted to a Glo bug and took a couple. #16 P-Tail, Flashback P-Tail and GR Hares Ear all took fish. Didn't pick un any fish on small midge trailers. All in all another great day of fishing.

Fished the upper riffles on this property for about 4 hrs. Got about 20 "hits" and landed about 10 Rainbows. Rolled two very large fish on a weighted yellow egg pattern - made my heart stop! The largest broke me off after a splashy hit a quick powerful run - wish I had a longer look! When I saw a few fish taking dries I switched from the egg pattern to a size 16 parachute Adams. Great day - clear and 64 degrees.

Fished the property for about 5 hours on Sunday. Caught about 20 rainbows and one brook - all very plump and apparently well fed. Most of the rainbows were 11-14 inches and very strong fighters. The fish were very wide (broad shouldered). Most of the fish were in the leading edge of the riffles in very shallow water (6 inches). I used a parachute Adams and a Zebra nymph on a very short dropper. I started about mid-property and started picking up fish immediately. As I moved down stream I had very little luck then returned to the upper section and got into more fish. The Adams worked very well from 3-4 PM. This was my first time on this propery and I certainly will return.

Had a great day many large fish opportunities. However the moss was really flowing heavy down the river. these rainbows are smart I caught one in fast water and he saw a large peice coming downstream and moved his head right in front of it. That was the order of the day I didn't land a fish until the evening and had my thrill I caught a 20+ rainbow on a dry. #16 brown caddis, I also caught a 15" bow on the same fly. What else could one ask for. The two guys that I fished with did better than me, I say we hooked 40 to 45 fish between us. My best fly was a buckskin # 16 or 18. Also BH PT #18. I love this property! Very hot day in Steamboat, 88-92 degrees. Water felt warm, and I'm sure that it had an effect on the fishing. Lots of "good" bugs around everywhere, but not a lot of strikes. However I did catch three 18"-19" rainbows, two on a #16 Prince and one on a #16 Caddis dry on top, so that automatically makes it a great day! Quite a bit of moss growing on the bottom and floating on top, so you'll need to clean up about every other cast.
