It was a beautiful day to fish the Little Snake River on the Sheep Mt. Ranch. Flow was about 100 cfs and the river was easily waded. There were a few small fish rising to caddis and PMD mayflies but all our fishing was done draging nymphs. Most of our fish were caught on size #12 BH Prince and BH pheasant tail nymphs as well as #18 or #20 copper johns. Three nice rainbows 16-18" were landed as well as numerous smaller rainbows and a half-dozen whitefish. All the riffles having a foot or more of water seemed to hold hungrey fish. The area fished was from the downstream boundary to a little above the guest cottage.

Beautiful sunny day on the Little Snake. Water was clear, very good water level and very wadeable. A lot of activity in the holes below the riffles using BH nymphs. Stayed in one spot several times to catch multiple fish out of the same hole. Lots of fish !! Used BH Princes, Red Copper Johns and Hares Ears to catch numerous Rainbows, Browns and Whitefish in the 6 to 10 inch range. Also caught some larger Rainbows in the 14 to 18 inch range. Had a couple lunker Rainbows on that I was unable to get close to the net. They toyed with me a while and then broke off. Steady caddis hatch through out the day and some surface activity. Caught a few browns on a #14 Elk Hair Caddis. The caddis were a little darker color than usual and the guides at the fishing store in Steamboat confirmed that the caddis were a little darker this year. Excellent day of fishing !!

Note: This report is from an RMAC member.

I fished the Little Snake on August 23rd. Oh what a fantastic day I had!! The river was absolutely beautiful, cold and clear and perfect for wading. Starting at 8:30AM, I fished from the western boundary to the west parking area. Using a small Elk Hair Caddis I caught around a dozen ranging 12 to 15 inches in size. Feeding slowed towards noon so I tried a small Prince Nymph in deep hole and immediately caught a very nice rainbow around three pounds. I took a break until 4:00PM and then began fishing again with the Elk Hair Caddis. Around 5:00PM all sort of bugs started to appear on the water and a feeding frenzy began. Everywhere I threw the Caddis I had strikes. I caught a bunch of fish, I lost track of the number, including one HUGE rainbow that I could not put both hands around! He must have been five or six pounds and took several minutes to land.

The water dropped to about 60 cfs in the days before our visit and the fish were shy. My buddy caught two of the big cuttbows, 18-20 inches, but my biggest was only 15 inches. They took parachute adams or dropper beadhead phesant tails or green copper johns. A couple rose to elkhair caddis. It was bright sunlight and slow fishing.

the river was a little high to cross it comfortably, so I was forced to change my tactics. I fished LARGE terrestials on the edges of the deeper runs and was rewarded with some of the most dramatic takes by large fish I have ever seen. I had to walk a lot of the river to find the situations I wanted, but was pleased with the results. Mostly rainbows in the usual 15-18 inch range, but both days I caught 2 of the 20 + inch fish. On the 21st the water dropped steadily all day,and the big Turk's quit working. Switched to a tan stonefly and bugger dead drifted and started picking up fish again. caught a handsome 12 " male brookie down by where the cable crosses the river.

Very good day on C-55, but I hit the flow just right. Had dropped from 400 cfs to 225 in the last couple of days . At that level you can cross fairly easily. Fishing was slower in AM--the best from Noon -3 PM, when there were various hatches. Caught many fat bows in the 14-18" range, with the largest a 21" cutbow, in a small side pocket. Also a hookjawed 14 "brook trout and several small whitefish. Pattern didnt really seem to matter--any beadhead or stonefy worked . A few smaller bows on a hopper.

I fished C-55 on the Little Snake on July 30, and it was a terrific experience. I caught more than a dozen big, healthy cutbows and rainbows, and NO whitefish. The cutbows hit early and fought respectably. But it was a shock when I connected with the wild rainbows, which were jet-propelled. I used dry fly/droppers all day, with caddis and hoppers on top, and beadhead flashback pheasanttails beneath. Water was clear and fairly low (80 cfs?), but fishing will get tougher as water levels drop.

We started about 8:30 in the morning and flows were increasing due to thunderstorms the night before. No rising fish and none could be induced to take surface fare so switched to nymphs. Immediately caught two nice heavy-weight bows (16-18") in a downstream deep run with a #14 bead-head prince nymph. Moving upsteam to a deep run above the lower parking area caught two more heavy weights on the prince and a BWO emerger. After lunch we fished for about an hour in the run in for the pool near the upper parking area. Flow continued to increase and the steam was running unclear, but caught another lunker about 18" on the prince. In all landed 5 good-sized bows and 8 total. My two guests did not fare as well.

Fishing was good both days until about 3 pm.Water temp came up and the fish called it a day. Air temp rose to the mid 80,s both days.I caught 11 the first day and 9 the second, my partners caught about the same.RS-2, stonefly nymphs, bead head caddis pupa, buggers, madame x, I caught a 22inch rainbow in the upstream ponded area, and the next cast caught a 4-inch monster. We caught only 1 cut-bow, all the rest were rainbows.we all caught a few whitefish both days.River is dropping fast, hopefully they will get some rain (after Grady gets his hay cut and baled).Cabin is comfortable and the ranchers were very gracious hosts.

This was my first time fishing the property. Water had been coming down but was still around 400cfs, a little high but still very fishable. It was a warm sunny day, started off around 8:30 with streamers and picked up a couple fish. I switched over to nymphing with big stoneflies and caddis patterns. Again, picked up a couple nice rainbows. Midges and caddies coming off but things didn't seem "on". Clouds started moving in along with the hail and rain, so I took a long lunch in the truck. After lunch I was about ready to bail when things really picked up on streamers. Landed quite a few rainbows mostly between 14-18". Fished most of the property in a day. Great day!

Good day. Caught several that pushed 18 inches and one that went 20, all rainbows. My fishing companions had similar luck. Fish were in heavier water and generally would only feed in the shade. Bright sun through out the day. Water warmed up to 70 degrees in afternoon and we quit fishing. Fish did not seem selective. I used hairs ear with a pheasant tail dropper in afternoon and picked up fish on both Companions used stimulators and caddis with good success. My largest was on a elk hair caddis in the morning.
I think the best fishing the rest of the month will be in early morning and evening as the water should continue to warm.
Great place!!!!

Very enjoyable first time on the property. Flow started at 100 that day and ended at 80 according to the chart--definitely fishable but starting to get on the low side for anything other than the deep holes. Took 100% rainbows --many small ones 9-12" on drys (caddis) , and three or four from 17-20"--the largest two on a golden stonefly nymph in very fast water--the cases were all over the rocks. Probably missed some good morning fishing--there were many hatches at dusk but not many risers.

: Fished this property for the first time yesterday. Stayed at the cabin overnight and I thought it was great, especially since it was just my dog and I. Women might have a problem with the "rusticness". The Ely's are very nice folks. I expected dry fly heaven according to previous reports here, but the flow was dropping fast and I probably arrived a week too late. By the time I arrived the flow was down to around 115 and the water temp was 67 in the afternoon. Not bad, but the fish were already hunkered down in the deep holes. After throwing attractor dries for a while with no luck, I figured out where they were. A prince nynph trailing a red c.j. produced some strong, beautiful, hungry rainbows from the deep holes, especially ones with cover. A great property!

It's beautiful up here. Good time catching fair amount of fish. The water was a little low and mossy. Fishing best in the deep holes. 15 fish in the 13-19 inch range. Only one small fish. Biggest fish took a leach pattern and brown drake w/pt dropper took the most.

All the folks in the fly shops say the river is low, but fishable. After 20 miles of dirt road down CR129 Im at the property. The water is low, but there are a few man-made features on the river that should prove interesting. At the base of the waterfall near the corral I catch a fish on almost every cast. Im using a Hopper Dropper with a Red Copper John. Half of these fish are taking the hopper. I must have caught or hooked about a dozen fish in this one spot. Later that morning I returned to this spot and pulled out a 20 inch Rainbow. I moved down river to a nice bend with an overhanging tree. Its the classic holding spot for trout. On the first cast a trout hits the Hopper Dropper like he hadnt eaten for months. After a few more cast the Hopper Dropper starts to slowly sink and Im thinking snag. Well the snag turned out to be another 20 inch Rainbow. Once I got him in the net I swear he was the same fish I caught in the waterfall. Ill never know if it was the same fish, but thats still two 20 Rainbows before noon. The remoteness of this river sure does have its advantages

Just an awesome day. Couldn't have been better. Caught all the fish on a dry and a dropper, mostly on the dry. A couple of fish were at least 18" an one 17". Best Flies were s8 Humphie, Hopper and dropper. Orange Stimulator and Royal Coachman. Only fished four hours but could not have had more fun. It was spectacular.

Stayed at C54, will try cabin on C55 next time. Met Chuck and Ivan on the lease here. Caught a few fish in the "stream improvements" only in the morning. Fish were showing stress due to water temps. Fish were gathered at the entrance of any fresh water running to the big pools. Either a false spawn or an attempt to get more oxygen, don't know. Flow was < 100 and water was hot, heating noticeably by the afternoon. less than good conditions to fish

Water temp in front of the cabin was 80 degrees. Even the fish in the 3 pools are highly stressed. Flow is down to a trickle. Would stay away from this one until cooler weather and pray for rain.

It's just a couple of miles up stream of C54 where we fished yesterday, but the river is quite a different fishery. This section would just be one big long wide low riffle with few sharp bends or deep runs and a pretty difficult place to fish, especially with low water(about 60 cfs today...even lower than yesterday). But they have taken care of that with some serious stream improvements. There are at least three places that we found on the property that have had small dams put in that create long wide deep backups that reach a couple of hundred yards long and almost fish like small ponds. Huge fish were found in each area, but only a dozen or so found there way into our nets. Sight fishing to huge cruising Rainbows is a kick in everybody's book, but it will test all your angling skills on a calm bright 90 degree day. Like C54 huge slabs in the 16 inch to 20 inch catagory was the norm for the day. Watching those big boys chase a Hopper down and devour it reminds you why you drive 4 to 5 hours to a place like this. Like yesterday a few took copper johns, BHPT and the like and a couple took wooly buggers, but this is definately grass hopper country in July! Gene

My favorite property - great cabin! My son and I fished this property in July for the first time. Many, many fish and not very selective - anything works. I lost track of how many "hits" I had on a #16 Adams. Most of the fish were 8-10 inches with a few 12-16 inches. Came back in Sept with the same results. Got a beautiful Rainbow behind the lower house in the big, deep pool. Talked to the owner who asked if the river needed to be stocked again - I don't think so. There appeared to be more fish here than the C-54 property downstream. I don't know if C-54 was stocked at all. Women may appreciate the C-54 cabins better than the C-55 cabin which is more rustic, but right on the water.
