Joe Bobinis and his friend and I thought we’d try a spring fling on the pig pond… Not. 
First we arrived right after a snow storm, it was 22 degrees but sunny, felt like 40 degrees (You gents who’ve been there after a bit of moisture know what’s coming…) We clean the boat, launch my canoe. We used droppers (mysis, midges, nymphs, etc.) and several types of streamers (buggers, tube streamers, etc.) Nothing in the morning, we thought it was too cold, they stayed deep. Then after lunch the action picked up, black and olive streamers. We had a number of large (6 most over 20”) fish on the line, all fought like I’ve never seen them at the pond, but none to the hand.
Then it was time to leave… You know the rest. I’ll post a picture of Joe’s Hummer (thank god for locking hubs!) to the Facebook page.
I think going forward, we'll stick to lazy days of summer - Tight Lines.

I got to the pond at around 1100 the road down to the pond is in great shape very easy for my truck to handle. I saw some risers throughout the day but they had no interest in my hopper. I fished a black slump buster most of the day had several tugs but only landed one, I say landed, but this fish would not fit in my net at all, I tried to pick her up just to big. When I finally did this rainbow must have been 27" and at least 15 pounds. When I went to release her she dropped eggs all over. I got her revived and back safe and happy so you guys can go after her again. There are a lot of weeds in the pond so fish the channels in between the weeds. Great place lots of big fish!!

Sunny, blue sky, and no wind. Fished from 10 AM to 2:30 PM. Three takes, all on RS2s dropped beneath a hopper and beetle. Lost the first two, landed the third -- a 32-inch rainbow, the largest trout I've caught outside of New Zealand. Thick and powerful, nearly too large for the net. Took a size 20 gray RS2 behind a beetle. Fish were sipping only in the middle of the lake. Steady midge hatch for most of the day. Zero interest in the dries and nothing on the streamers. RS2 is the magic fly this time of year. Sometimes a one-fish day is a good day after all.

WOW these fish are huge, but really hard to land. They seemed to like the hopper and the black bugger. Good calibaetis hatch all day but really hard to match.

“Wow, they don’t call Kremmling Pond the “Pig Farm” for nothing…

Joe Bobinis (member) and I arrived around 9am, fished between the fast moving thunderstorms till about 2:30pm or so. Beautiful day (except for the T-storms) with a very light breeze.

We stayed mostly on the Dam side of the pond and leveraged the row boat. We caught 4 fish, all rainbows on the day. I caught a 16-17 incher on a wooley bugger, Joe caught two very nice 20+ incher’s both on hoppers I think. I caught a PIG of a fish, 8lbs or more and 25+ inches on a bead-head with a green feather tail – my biggest Trout ever (sent pictures to RMA). Used 3X leader and 4X tippet.

Would recommend high-ground 4X4 when visiting, if you get caught in a storm – you won’t get out till it dries possibly even with it. The Mud is gooey, sticky and slippery.

Great day, nice fish, good company.”

It was cool and rainy all day. Large fish were porpoising in the morning as they took (I think) callibaetis pupae/larvae or whatever they are. We got one and lost one on callibaetis imitations, and caught another on a shrimp pattern. No action on big leeches or wolly buggers, although we tried. The fish stopped coming up in the afternoon and the rain became intense, so we left.

While Denver was cold and rainy – C-46 outside Kremmling was a postcard day in Colorado. The road in was passable in my 4-WD MDX, but just barely. Around 8 AM I made it to within 350 yards when I decided that parking and walking to fish was better than walking back to the road for a tow-out. As in years past, this small glory hole did not disappoint. Within 5 minutes of launching my belly boat, I was into a 4 lb. rainbow, taken on a #20 mysis shrimp. I caught 4 more on the same pattern in the next 90 minutes – all between 18 and 21 inches. After a break I switched to a black wooley bugger and caught 5 of the same size before the clouds rolled in around 1:00 PM and I left before the snow started falling. Thank you RMAC for another epic day!

Arrived on the water around 10am. Pouring rain in Denver and all the way to the tunnel, then sun and cloud mix at pond with strong winds and white caps but no rain. Fished until 1pm, tried woollys, nymphs, streamers, double rigs, dry/dropper, trolling and retrieving, and even using the Antero bobber method. I had one strike and no fish, my friend didn't even get a strike. It was hard work to keep the float tube near the damn and not get blown to the other end of the lake. Had to get off the lake around 1pm with the winds finally bringing in a thunderstorm. Didn't want to get stuck on the muddy road during a big heavy rain storm so we called it a day.
Need to get back out somewhere soon and get the skunk off my hands!

Two of us fished all day in unrelenting, thirty mile an hour wind and overcast. On the surface, below the surface, floating and sinking lines. Dries, streamers and nymphs. Not a single hit. Nothing. Lots of small birds near the surface of the pond seemingly eating midges. Not a single rising fish.

The wind did not let up for a minute. Then it began to rain and we'd been warned about slick conditions so we left.

Editor's Note: Fishing can be difficult on Kremmling Pond during times of high wind, and exponentially tougher when the barometer is falling.

Thanks for the boat repair. Oars work fine. Road in is OK. Algea is very thick but workable. I finally caught one of the Super-Hogs of Kremmling Pond.
About 10:30 AM I was fishing a cone-head brown peacock nymph very deep. Fish was 31 inches long and guesstimate of 10 to 12 lbs.
Caught about 10 fish ranging from 19 to 22" - one baby about 16'. Weather was great - all in all a great day.

Fishing was good. Two anglers. Arrived about 9:00 am and caught about a dozen fish in the 15-20 inch range the largest about 4 lbs. These were all caught on dry dropper rigs, using large nymphs or damsel nymphs slightly twitched.

Fishing became slow from noon to about 6:00 Pm so we went into town for a beer.

6:30 - 7:30 Action picked up again and we caught another dozen or so mostly on dry dropper, one on stripped size 6 bunny streamer (white) and a couple on a smaller curved size 16 pheasant tail.

The pond seemed smaller and the weed beds are up. Callibatis were hatching all day but not many rises or takes when we fished callibatis nymphs. We pumped the stomach contents of two of the smaller fish we caught and found them loaded with midge nymphs and pupae, a few callibatis and no mysis?

Perfect evening (we stayed until 8:30 PM) with little to no action? We ovserved some very large trout - on porpised that was at least 7 lbs., but seemed inactive, and no very large trout were even hooked.

My wife and I got a late start and didn't hit the water until 10:30. The weather was sunny, the temp in the 60's and the hogs were rising to a Baetis hatch. It didn't take long for both of us to hook up with dry baetis emergers. At 12:30 we were chased from the pond by an electrical storm and took a half hour lunch break. I went back out into a steady rain and threw Wolly Buggers, Brown and Olive as well as Egg Sucking Leach. I caught fish on all as well as several huge break offs that I never saw. The weather cleared and we went back to dries. At 5:00 another electrical storm moved in so we called it a day. Final tally: 18 strong shouldered rainbows. The smallest was 1 lb...the largest 4 lbs...most were over 2 lbs. A great day. The road would have been a factor had we not had 4 wheel drive and good clearance. The pond itself is pretty weedy and I'm not sure how much longer it will remain clear. Ask the office...but if it's clear...it is catching...not fishing...fun!

Fished with a buddy and got on the water around 8:30am. Some fish were rolling, clear sky, wind calm, water like glass. Caught first fish around 10:30am on a #20 black bead head zebra midge. Caught another fish around noon on an olive green wooly bugger. First fish was 20 inches and the 2nd one was 22 inches, both heavy and good fighters. Weather rolled in around 12:30 so we sat in the car and waited it out for an hour and then went back out. Had 2 strikes on a small red midge nymph but did not catch any more fish. My buddy caught 3 fish, 18", 21",and 23" all with broad shoulders and good fighters. He caught 2 on an olive wooly bugger and the other one on a twenty incher. He had another good strike on a yellow stone fly nymph. Weather rolled in again around 4:30 with pretty heavy winds so we called it a day. Tried all kinds of different nymphs and emergers of different sizes and depths but only caught the 5 fish between us.

The 2 track into the pond was pretty muddy and you definitely want 4 wheel drive.

Built a new 18" wide 16' long foot bridge for the ditch crossing at the parking area and installed it on Friday. Road had 3 muddy spots but I didn't have any trouble pulling the trailer thru going in or out, but you will need a high clearance 4 wd to get in and out safely, [and good driving skills : ) ].

We fished for 5 hours and caught one fish. We had two other hookups. The weather was unsettled with rainshowers, clouds, wind, more wind, more clouds, and some wind. We tried scuds, buggers, calibaetis nymphs, etc. It was tough fishing. There was no hatch that went on and the wind would have killed it anyway had it happened.

It was good. Calibaetis hatch for much of the day but these fish didn't want them on top and they didn't want anything but calibaetis nymphs below the surface. Caught some good numbers in the AM but they were all smallish for this property (15-18"). Then wind kicked up in the afternoon but so did the algae, etc. We had to keep cleaning off our flies and then I started to WHINE about it. BAM! A big one takes my nymph and I'm into my backing in no time. Then it's backtracking under me so I've got my fins up in the air and my rod on the other side of me. Good laugh for my buddy who has stopped to watch all the action. I try 3 times to get him into my net. Too big. Finally get him in my 16" deep net. His tail is out on one side and head out on the other SO its 32+ inches. No camera but I have a witness. I had to just go to shore and drink my beer. How could I top that?

Great Day for fishing. Road to Water is possible with Car, but reccomend 4x4. My camry made it, but would have liked to have a truck. My 12 yr old got his first 3 pounder with a #12 black leach. I landed a 18 inch with the same leach and another large one with a black wolly bugger with green accents. 5 fish total that day with my son getting two of them. Wind was terrible after 1:00. Was so bad anchor would not hold boat and wind took us everywhere dragging achor and all. Fish are large and fat (shaped like footballs). Great day until wind started up in PM. Gave us time to hit hot sulpher springs on the way home. Great Father/Son Day!

I fished C-46, Kremmling Pond, May 25, 2008 between 9-4pm with my good buddy, Howie. There are very large fish in this small pond. What are these fish eating? The book says Mysis, but from the size of these fish, I would guess frogs, ducklings, and everything else they could find! We launched our belly boats about 9am, but were not into fish until around 11am. We caught hooked many large rainbows in the southwest corner of the pond between 18 and 20. We tried all colors of Buggers, leeches, and other streamers, but finally started getting the takes on olive rubber legged buggers with flash, with a medium retrieve. My buddy Howie, hooked an absolute tank from dam when we were taking a break from the tubes. This fish took his pattern just below the dock, just as it hit the water and immediately headed for the middle of the pond! It jumped two time, took Howie into his backing, and threw the hook on the second jump. The water is cold and the weeds not too bad this early in the year. Just be sure to take a camera & fully revive the fish prior to release.

Arrived at the pond at 9:30 am. The air was clear and still as death. Began fishing the "old standards", black wooly and various leech patterns...no action. Finally, about 11:00 I switched to a pair of small, bead head nymphs and began fishing the north eastern shore line, over the weeds and Wham-O! Only caught five (missed or broke off another 8 or ten) but they were all hot fish and from 20 to 23". These guys had the sholders and the attitude of angry cage fighters. The secret was moderate retrives, 2 to 3 feet over the weeds. The wind started up about 1:00 and got progressively more problematic until we finally couldn't take it any more and left at 4:00 pm. Next time I fish the pond I will be there at sunrise and plan on quiting when the wind shows up.

BATTLED WIND, RAIN AND THREATENING LIGHTNING IN THE DISTANCE. OLIVE BUGGERS AND MAROON MOHAIR LEECHES WERE THE CALL. CAUGHT A NUMBER OF FAT 'BOWS IN THE DEEP WATER OFF THE DOCK STRIPPING SLOW AND LONG. I COULD BARELY GET MY HAND AROUND THEIR TAILS FOR THE GLORY SHOT. HAD HATCHES OF MIDGES AND FALLING FLYING RED ANTS BUT ONLY A HANDFUL OF RISERS. GO DEEP.

Arrived at 10:00 am while the weather was still mild (high 40s). Saw some big swirls near the dam. Fished the Dam with dry/dropper with no luck. Put on a #10 black wooly bugger. We landed 3 bows all over 20" and 5lbs. in the next 3 hours. Broke off another 4 fish between the two of us. Wind started to howl and it started snowing and the fish turned off completely (2:00 pm). Best fished with a pontoon boat or belly boat. Wading would be difficult as the bottomis heavily silted.

Big fish as usual. Heavy moss on the water makes it difficult to fish, but worth the effort. Be careful on the road going in--best to have 4wheel drive through the mud holes. I had best luck on Pheasant tail dropper--there was very little surface activity yet.

I will echo Mike's report, it was difficult fishing, caught only four med sized, had many soft takes that i did not hook. Green streamer, seal bugger were the flies that worked on a class one sinking line. Pond is crawling with scuds but a scud pattern would not work and i had some that exactly matched size and color. Saw surface activity and fish cruising around but could not draw any surface takes. Sunny day, clear water, lake is full, lots of bugs in the water, shrimp and scuds.

The fishing was decent, but it was not "kiddie pond" fishing. Several methods were used to catch fish, and there was no fly that really worked well for an extended stretch of time. The flies that we fished were GRHE soft hackles, black conehead wooly buggers, red leeeches, midge pupas, and a couple of fish were caught on calibaetis (sp?) nymphs as well. We used full sink, sink tip, intermediate, and floating lines. All-in-all, there were about 15 to 20 fish landed, and perhaps that many more takes that we did not land.

"Should rename Kremmling Pond to Tarpoon Pond." Just great fishing. Caught 15 over 20 inches and spooked another 15 that were even bigger. Caught the largest one under the old dock. Best combination was a Stimulator on top with a bright green Copper John about 36 to 48 inches below.

It's kind of a different looking property. When you get there you'd think there can't be much fish life in here, its kinda shallow and real mossy and marshy around the banks, it probably doesn't have any big fish at all you'd say. Well you'd be wrong, it has some of the biggest strongest Rainbows I've ever wrestled with. I only caught 7 or 8 and lost about the same number, but they were a kick. These fish are like the old Fraser slabs on steroids. They're like the Hogue Ranch hogs on a power lifting program, and yes Vance I'm sorry to say they even make the White River hens look weakly. All you'll need is a cream or pink scud hanging below anything. I caught one on a brown bugger but its hard to find a moss free lane. That can only be done from the middle of this smallish pond from your tube or the boat that I borrowed.(I hope that was OK??) Did I mention I only fished for about half the day in a steady rain. I can't even imagine what it woulda been like on a nice day. By the way if its raining don't go in there. It's a mile of dirt road off the main road and when it's wet it is verrry slick, treacherous and dangerous. I have a 4x4 and still thought I was going to have to walk out of there!
